DESIGNER, TREND + CONCEPT: FUN 101 (Hardlines) – OBPDP

In close partnership with our Trend Team, you will influence merchant counterparts as well as other cross functional design partners by driving Macro Trend reporting & key Concept development per assigned brand/category, ensuring that our retail products meet merchant assortment strategies, price points and overall creative direction.  The exciting part of retail?  It’s always changing! 

As a Trend + Concept Designer, you'll be taking on a Lead role as you assume responsibility for trend research & reporting and concept direction for owned brand consumer products. You will coordinate and implement all projects assigned with limited and/or general direction. Working within the Product Design (consumer retail products) Team, you will influence your peers, as well as partners and leadership within Merchandising and Marketing. You will own and lead projects within the FUN 101 pyramid (Consumer Electronics, Sporting Goods, Travel, Toys consumer retail product categories) by bringing an innovative approach to identifying white space, emerging guest needs, and helping to drive differentiation for our assortments.

In this role, a strong understanding, advocacy and balance of Target’s Owned Brand Portfolio and industry leading national brands are essential.  You’ll leverage trend information and inspiration to develop clear and compelling concept direction per business / categories assigned.  Using your skills and talents, you will create and present informative, compelling and influential presentations to project teams, cross functional teams, leadership, and/or enterprise partners.

Additionally, comprehending the nuance of both what is said and how it’s said, you’ll synthesize complex information and communicate the appropriate levels of detail.  You will create and maintain accurate ROI data on all projects and maintain a general understanding of financial impacts to the business.

Responsibilities:                               

  • Develop and present visually compelling trend materials and brand concepts that meet intent for style, quality, performance and value. Utilize both internal and external Trend reporting services to inform development of Macro Trends and Concepts.

  • Maintain an always-on approach to market trend research, incorporating a balance of “art & science” to ensure a balance of data and intuition.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of divisional strategic initiatives and proactively work to implement supporting solutions in partnership with CFT & Vendors as well as lead the conversation regarding Owned Brand Concepts and Trend.

  • Survey competitive landscape to impact the development of best-in-class products to help guide strategy and find opportunities for new products, variations and ideas.

  • Guest empathy: Understand the overall Target guest, the core guest within the product/brand/category.

  • Ability to own multiple projects, develop and adhere to schedules, prioritize workload, and work in a fast paced, challenging, and continually evolving environment.

  • Coach and develop associate designers & team members.

About you:

  • 4-year college degree in Design (industrial, architecture, fashion, graphic design) or equivalent experience

  • 4 -6 years relevant Trend, Concept or Design experience, retail experience a plus

  • Familiarity with the trend industry and resources; ability to track and incorporate new resources across the trend industry, cultural events, social media, etc.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, organizational and project management skills

  • A demonstrated ability to synthesize trend information into clear, compelling, and influential visual materials to inform innovation and product development direction for divisions, brands, assortments, seasonal storytelling.

  • Excels in design thinking a strong strategic and interdisciplinary mindset

  • Passionate about Design, Technology, Culture and Brand building

  • Ability to help push retail brands forward to lead and differentiate within the market

  • Strong commercial design and color sensibility

  • Self-motivated, accountable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision

This position may be considered for a Remote or Hybrid (known internally at Target as "Flex for Your Day") work arrangement based on Target's needs.  A Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at a Target location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.  A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member's core role may be performed either remote or onsite at a Target location depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
