Job duties also include installation and maintenance of street lighting, minor building maintenance and other work as required. Position is an entry level class which typically requires four (4) years to complete for advancement to Journeyman Lineman.Job Scope:The Electric Apprentice Lineman - Service Technician works with tools and test equipment to install and maintain electric service to residential, commercial, industrial, City buildings and plants, street lighting, and other related activities. This employee works with primary and/or secondary voltage wires and cable in favorable and unfavorable weather conditions, which requires alertness and care in order to protect employees and others. Work is normally performed under the direct supervision of a Journeyman Lineman or Lead Electric Lineman. The job requires the employee to connect, test and install all equipment necessary to maintain safe and reliable electric service to customers and a safe work environment for fellow employees. This employee is responsible to the Utility Manager in the absence of the Electric Distribution Manager. Work is subject to inspection for completion, quantity, and quality.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:? Constructs, installs, maintains and repairs all overhead and underground electric systems needed to supply reliable and safe electric service to customers.? Constructs, installs, maintains and repairs all street lighting, and other lighting owned and operated by the City of Gardner.? Makes all terminations to overhead and underground electric distribution systems.? Trenches and installs underground cables.? Installs meters and connects all secondary services including single and three-phase.? Operates equipment, testing devices and tools usually associated with primary and secondary voltage wires in a proficient and safe manner.? Must be available to be on call for emergencies and after hours call-out as needed.? Operates equipment associated with locating underground utilities as required by Kansas One call.? Performs other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.Education, Certification and Experience Requirements:Requires one (1) year of experience in primary and/or secondary electric service construction of overhead and underground service systems; experience in termination and connection of secondary single and three-phase systems; experience in maintenance of wiring and lighting devices; and experience in metering and controls. The employee must be a high school graduate, GED, or equivalent. The position also requires a minimum of three (3) years experience as an electrician or service installer or combination of vocational training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and ability; experience in operation of related equipment and tools. Requires the possession of a valid Kansas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a good driving record.Required Knowledge, Ability, Skill and Other Attributes:Requires a basic working knowledge of approved methods to construct, install, maintain, repair and test overhead and underground secondary electrical systems; knowledge of related occupational hazards and safety precautions relative to primary and/or secondary electrical voltages including single and three-phase and installation and maintenance of street lights; knowledge of the operation of a bucket truck, trencher, service truck, testing equipment and power tools usually associated with primary and/or secondary electric systems; ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately; and ability to maintain reliable and safe service to customers by reducing outages to a minimum time with proper notification to customers whenever possible. Job Scope:The Electric Lineman performs a variety of skilled tasks in the field requiring the use of journeyman's tools in connection with the activities and requirements of the Utility Department. Employee frequently works with high-voltage wires under favorable and unfavorable weather conditions requiring exceptional care in order to protect the lives of themselves and others. Work is normally performed under the supervision of the Distribution Manager, or lead lineman, although employees will frequently be assigned special jobs where they will work independently. Supervision may be exercised over apprentice lineman. Work is subject to inspection by superiors in progress or on completion for quality and quantity. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:? Constructs, maintains and repairs electrical overhead and underground distribution lines, strings wire, installs and hangs transformers, lighting arresters, cut-outs, insulators, capacitors, gang-operated air breakers, voltage regulators, street lights, and other equipment and materials;? Finds and repairs faulted overhead and underground 15KV distribution lines and restores services.? Trenches and installs conduit for new primary underground cable and service.? Installs and connects secondary (480 V and below) services.? Operates and maintains automated switching equipment.? Takes precautions necessary to assure safety of self, subordinates, and others in the area of work;? Assists in installing and removing poles; uses hydraulic-pneumatic equipment for setting poles.? Trims trees, shrubs and brush within electric easements and under power lines.? Assists in loading and unloading materials and equipment;? Performs other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.? Training and oversight of apprentice linemen.? Subject to 24 hour call out.? Operates various construction equipment as required. ? Considerable knowledge of related occupational hazards and safety precautions, with knowledge of first aid, including CPR. Ability to climb poles, perform pole top rescue, and work with high voltage and exercise proper safety precautions. Ability to find and repair overhead and underground faults and restore service. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately. Considerable knowledge of operation and use of bucket trucks, digger derricks, and trencher. Good physical condition, sufficient strength and agility to climb poles, to perform heavy manual tasks related to line construction, and to work under varying weather conditions.
