About the position

The Registered Nurse (RN) position in the Mother Baby unit at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a full-time night role focused on providing exceptional care to postpartum mothers and their newborns. The Mother Baby unit, known as 6 Blue, is designed to create a patient and family-centered environment, ensuring that mothers and their infants receive individualized attention and education throughout their stay. The unit is equipped with spacious and private patient rooms that allow for natural light, enhancing the overall experience for families during this critical time. As a member of the nursing staff, you will be responsible for caring for antepartum and postpartum patients, as well as well babies. The role involves teaching new parents about baby care, breastfeeding, and self-care, while also providing support for mothers facing complications during pregnancy. The unit is staffed with certified lactation consultants who are available daily to assist mothers with breastfeeding, ensuring that both mothers and infants receive the necessary support for successful breastfeeding practices. The RN will perform comprehensive assessments, develop care plans, and implement nursing interventions based on patient needs. You will actively engage with patients and their families, providing education and support while advocating for optimal patient care. The position requires collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure a coordinated approach to care, and you will be expected to document all assessments, interventions, and patient education accurately and timely. Responsibilities

  • Perform and accurately document physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments considering age-specific criteria.

  • Provide timely education and answers to patients and families, documenting all education provided.
  • Welcome and orient patients and families to the unit, encouraging their participation in care.
  • Advocate for resources that enhance patient safety and participate in budget formulation and implementation.
  • Perform peer evaluations and provide constructive feedback to colleagues regarding performance.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives and multidisciplinary quality improvement teams.
  • Share professional and technical information with colleagues and students, acting as a resource when needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved/accredited nursing program.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • One (1) year of RN experience, with specialty areas possibly requiring more experience.
  • Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) nursing license.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Professional certification in a nursing organization preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • NRP certification required from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
  • S.T.A.B.L.E certification within 6 months of hire.

Nice-to-haves
