What you'll do

The Summer Nurse Intern is a nursing student enrolled in this paid internship program that includes college credit through Hartwick school of nursing.  Under the direct supervision of an assigned RN preceptor, the student may perform clinical nursing skills and apply and document components of the nursing process appropriate for a student at this level of preparation.  The student is expected to attend on-site faculty led weekly classes for this 10-week program and complete all course requirements.

Performs patient treatments that are within the scope of unlicensed assistive personnel under the supervision of an RN

  • Obtains and records vital signs and collects specimens (85-95%) as directed by the RN.
  • Provides ADLs, including but not limited to toileting, hygiene, monitoring intake and output, meal serving, setting up, and feeding patients, measured by patient and preceptor feedback.
  • Provides mobility activities including range of motion exercises, transferring, and ambulating of patients, as measured by direct preceptor and supervisory observation.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment of patient care areas as evidenced by preceptor observation.

Communicates patients’ needs to appropriate personnel and seeks assistance when necessary to meet those needs.

  • Answers patients’ requests for assistance in a timely fashion, as noted by preceptor and patient feedback.
  • Reports patients’ needs and relevant patient care data to the RN, as measured by preceptor.

Acquires knowledge and skills under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor and with the support of assigned college nursing faculty (student role).

  • Attends all required classes
  • Performs patient care and treatments
  • Applies the nursing process to patient care situations and documents care delivered appropriately.
  • Follows Bassett Medical Center policies and procedures.
  • Follows standards related to patient safety. 

Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed

  • Performs other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager

What we need from you

Education/Qualifications:

  • Nursing student enrolled in a college program, entering Senior year in the fall
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a health-related position or as a Nursing Assistant/Patient Care technician preferred

Certification:

  • BLS preferred

Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff.
  • Ability to function as an active team member.
  • Demonstrates competency in required basic care skills relevant to area of practice.

Physical Requirements:

  • Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 lbs. for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
  • Typing/clerical/dexterity, repetitive motion, seeing/monitor/computer use, standing, stooping, tactical sense, talking, visual acuity and walking throughout the shift.
  • Occasional balancing, climbing, couching, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching

Hazards:

  • Bodily fluid/bloodborne exposure
  • Radiation/radiant energy

Working conditions:

  • Occasional noise, vibration, wet and/or humid, odors.

Travel:

  • The job may require travel from time-to-time, but not on a regular basis
