Laboratory Manager ID-12597

AOA Dx is seeking a passionate and motivated Laboratory Manager to join us in our quest to develop an early-stage liquid biopsy test for ovarian cancer. The current role is for a Laboratory Operations Manager to join our team and advance our platform. The candidate will support a highly diverse research organization and act as the point of contact for all laboratory operations.

The Laboratory Manager will maintain the laboratory space & equipment, ensure compliance and safety, oversee lab procurement systems and processes, and assist the R&D team with all infrastructure and laboratory needs. This position also will work cross-functionally with AOA HR and Operations on facility and finance alignment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations in our R&D labs, including safety and compliance.
  • Ensure appropriate Environmental Health and Safety procedures that R&D team members are trained on. Partner with EHS consultants and develop procedures to ensure our labs and employees are operating safely and compliant with all environmental and safety regulations, including Federal, State and/or City regulations.
  • Oversee handling and disposal of hazardous chemical and biomedical waste.
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance and calibrations and bringing in new equipment as needed. Monitor and maintain lab equipment, manage routine repairs/calibrations, and handle service contract renewals and upgrades.
  • Communicate space and equipment needs to AOA senior leadership. Coordinate across functions and vendors to support lab plans for equipment and space needs. Help strategize, coordinate, and execute all large-scale facility changes, including lab reorganizations and/or expansions.
  • Manage/supervise team members as appropriate and necessary. Ensure appropriate training, coaching and mentoring of team members.
  • Ensure Lab Facilities are functioning appropriately and work with AOA leadership and HR with any facility issues impacting the laboratories to find mitigations and solutions.
  • Accountable for budgeting and all procurement processes to support the laboratory and the R&D team and project needs. Ensure continuous improvements for laboratory procurement processes to maintain necessary levels of consumables, reagents, and equipment.
  • Work with leadership and finance to track and maintain R&D operations budget to ensure accuracy in forecasting (monthly and quarterly) and update based on laboratory and workflow changes and needs.
  • Maintain comprehensive laboratory reagent and consumable information for the R&D team to have visibility to for proper ordering and necessary updates and additions.
  • Oversee all aspects of daily lab operations, safety, and compliance and, in collaboration with lab leadership, proactively identify and resolve risks/issues.
  • Be the main point of contact for lab staff and leadership for day-to-day operations in the laboratory.
  • Receive and track deliveries and be point of contact for all shipping of laboratory reagents, consumables, to and from AOA headquarters.
  • Oversee internal training to ensure laboratory processes are followed and participate in onboarding of new hire members.
  • Collaborate with R&D team for appropriate inventory and storage, documentation, and processing of samples.
  • Work with R&D leadership and Project Manager to ensure AOA has appropriate supply of vendor-sourced samples.
  • Work with team members to establish and maintain procedures for robust sample tracking of cohorts for R&D work as needed, at appropriate scale.
  • Anticipate, troubleshoot, manage and resolve wet-lab problems, develop and execute strategy for any off-hours emergency responses.

Experience and Qualifications

  • The position requires a BS or MS in chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, or related field with a minimum of 2-3 years of laboratory experience in an academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology setting.
  • The ideal candidate should be well-organized, adaptable, creative, and skilled in managing a dynamic startup environment
  • In-depth experience in establishing and managing lab set-up and ongoing operations.
  • Experience in relocating lab equipment, chemicals, and biological materials.
  • Experience in procurement systems and maintaining vendor relationships.
  • Knowledge and skill in the application of physical containment requirements for safely working with biohazardous material.
  • Up-to-date understanding of lab safety and EH&S policies as mandated by local, state, and federal government bodies.
  • Excellent analytical skills and flexibility in resolving complex lab issues under tight deadlines.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with a team-oriented attitude.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong scientific fundamentals and analytical background.
  • Logical problem solving and demonstrated ability to organize and move project tasks forward in an orderly and structured fashion.
  • Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effectively communicate issues/problems and results that impact timelines, accuracy and reliability of laboratory data.
  • Experience with standard data analysis tools (Excel) and the quantitative background to advance this knowledge on the job is expected.
  • Physical Demands:
  • Up to 75 % of the day may be spent at a lab bench.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Location: Onsite in Denver, CO

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range: $80,000 - $100,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
