About the position
As a Splicer I Fiber at Golden State Utility, you will be responsible for properly terminating, splicing, and preparing fiber optic cables within a telecommunications system. This role involves working with various types of cables, including overhead, underground, and submarine, while ensuring safety and efficiency in all operations.
Responsibilities
- Splice overhead, underground or submarine multiple conductor cables.
- Climb utility poles or towers, utilize truck mounted lift-bucket or descend into underground vaults.
- Cut sheath from installed cable to gain access to defective cable connections, as well as cut and peel sheath and insulation from newly installed cable and conductors.
- Test (trace or phase out) each conductor to identify corresponding conductors in adjoining cables, using test lamp or bell system.
- Read and interpret mechanical, electrical, digital drawings, maps, blueprints, diagrams, etc.
- Operate technical equipment, including but not limited to computer, OTDR, and fusion splicing equipment, and ensure functionality.
- Complete daily production reports of work performed.
- Respond to emergency call outs as needed, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended days.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years experience as a fiber splicer with experience on outside plant or system installations while working from blueprints, specifications, and system documentation.
- Ability to apply reasoning and understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
- Ability to work in emergencies at night and weekends if needed, including holidays and extended days.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Able to lift and pull up to 80 lbs.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work within time constraints.
