About the position

The Ramp Tower Controller position at San Diego International Airport involves coordinating the movement of aircraft on the non-movement side of the airport. This role is part of a team of professional air traffic controllers responsible for ensuring safe and efficient operations at one of the most unique international airports on the U.S. west coast. Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the movement of aircraft on the non-movement side of the airport.
  • Authorize aircraft pushbacks and taxiing to the movement area for handoff to the air traffic control tower.
  • Direct aircraft to the proper gate and deconflict them from other aircraft in the non-movement area.
  • Utilize state-of-the-art systems to provide situational awareness about anticipated aircraft arrivals and departures.
  • Communicate with pilots using aviation radios and with dispatchers and airport personnel using FM radios and landlines.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (or GED).
  • Minimum of four (4) years experience as a journey level air traffic controller with the United States Department of Defense or FAA.
  • Mobility and fitness to safely work in an air traffic control type tower, including the ability to lean over work consoles/equipment for panoramic surveillance of aircraft.
  • Distant and near vision correctable to 20/20 in each eye, with normal color vision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in English.
  • No chronic disease of the ear that might interfere with the use of standard or cordless headsets; no hearing loss in either ear of more than 25 decibels in the specified frequency ranges.
  • Successful completion of an education/experience background investigation and a fingerprint-based criminal history record check.
  • Ability to be granted and maintain a security badge as mandated by the Authority, FAA, and TSA.
  • Ability to meet all minimum drug screening and prohibitions as established by the Authority and under applicable law.

Nice-to-haves

  • Air Traffic Control experience with a tower rating or certification is desirable.
